The Partnership for Energy Efficiency in Buildings (PEEB) marks a major milestone in Mexico with the launch of the first PEEB Cool-funded project. This financing agreement with Nacional Financiera (NAFIN) will encourage the transition in the country’s building sector towards sustainable construction.
Buildings account for nearly 20% of Mexico’s total energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, yet developers and construction firms are facing challenges in securing affordable financing for adopting sustainable building techniques. Many financial institutions perceive energy-efficient projects as high-risk and costly, leading to a persistent funding gap for sustainable infrastructure.
This project benefits from the first PEEB Cool approved loan globally. By combining $25 million from the Green Climate Fund through PEEB with $75 million from AFD, the project will unlock opportunities for robust, comfortable and energy-efficient building development across Mexico, led by the clients of NAFIN.
“This achievement is the result of strong inter-institutional coordination and a shared commitment to transforming the construction sector towards more sustainable models.”, said Alexia Levesque, AFD Regional Director for Mexico, Cuba, and Central America.
Key impacts include:
- Accelerating the adoption of sustainable building techniques
- Reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the construction sector
- Strengthening institutional capacities for sustainable building practices
This program goes beyond traditional financing by supporting projects that integrate sustainable design including mitigation to climate change and robustness to climate and natural hazards.
As part of PEEB’s global mission, this pioneering project highlights how strategic partnerships can accelerate the transition to low-carbon, resilient building practices, contributing to global climate action goals.
