Morocco explores climate finance via Article 6 with PEEB

On 7 July in Rabat (Morocco), PEEB, its partner ministries—the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development (Ministère de la Transition Écologique et du Développement Durable – MTEDD), the Ministry of National Territory Planning, Land Planning, Housing and City Policy (Ministère de l’Aménagement du Territoire National, de l’Urbanisme, de l’Habitat et de la Politique de la Ville – MATNUHPV), and key actors in the buildings sector—gathered to make innovative finance work for a sustainable transformation of the buildings sector.

In the launch workshop of the PEEB Climate Finance Incubator activities in the country, participants explored how Article 6 of the Paris Agreement can support mitigation projects in the buildings sector, based on international experiences and considerations about the Moroccan national context.

An overview of the Article 6 mechanisms empowered the participants to identify:

  • capacity needs in the Moroccan buildings ecosystem
  • types of project with potential viability

Throughout the next months, the PEEB team will continue to exchange with stakeholders to develop training activities and continue the preparation of projects.

The PEEB-Morocco cooperation is a perfect match: the country is a first-mover in Article 6 readiness, while PEEB is leading in the development of Article 6 methodologies that are adapted to the complexity of the buildings sector. Together, they will set the standard for the development of Article 6 projects for buildings.
