This September in New York, the Partnership for Energy Efficiency in Buildings (PEEB) will join force to spotlight the urgent needs of scaling up financing for green buildings and the role of development banks.
Why the urgency?
Building energy efficiency investment needs to triple to keep the world on track with the Paris agreement goals. Development banks, with expertise in their context and policy environment, are uniquely positioned to close the gap in energy efficiency finance. Development banks working on the topic, as well as financial mechanisms and green building products exist in the market. Yet, these financial institutions continue to concentrate funding on conventional building projects.
On the run-up to COP30, PEEB is building momentum to their initiatives and aligning actors to shape the COP30 discussions on buildings and climate, in collaboration with partners such as the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC), and development banks from PEEB partner countries.
How exactly is PEEB keeping up the momentum?
On September 23, 12:30-14:00, the roundtable at the Climate Week NYC Executive Series: “Financing Green Buildings at scale: what role for development banks, public and private finance?”, co-organized by PEEB and the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC), will put PEEB’s ambition on the agenda. Co-chaired by representatives of the COP30 Presidency and the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, the session will bring together governments, development banks, and financial institutions to identify solutions for scaling sustainable buildings finance.
The roundtable also marks the launch of its expanded Development Banks and Energy Efficiency in Buildings toolkit. A training based on the “Energy Efficiency in Social Infrastructure”, developed in partnership with the Finance in Common Summit (FiCS) and 15 development banks, is now part of our set of practical solutions to promote the expansion of sustainable building portfolios.
What’s next?
From New York to Belém, PEEB is scaling up its mission: transforming buildings into a driver of climate action and sustainable development. In collaboration with activation group 12 of the COP30 Presidency, PEEB is working to spotlight the role of development banks and expand its toolbox into a broader solution, available through all interested institutions via cooperation with partners institutions working on the topic. Stay tuned as we share outcomes from Climate Week and highlight the people and partners leading this transition.
