The Mediterranean is warming about 20% faster than the global average, which raises energy costs and climate risks. Buildings account for a large share of the region’s energy use and greenhouse gas emissions, underscoring the need for better design and operation.
PEEB Med and AFD, working with ADEME and MeetMED III, funded by the European Union, have launched a free online course to help advance sustainable construction in practice: “Building Sustainably in the Mediterranean Climate”. Here are 10 reasons to join.
1. It’s completely free
The MOOC is 100% free and open to everyone. It is also fully online!
2. No prerequisites
Whether you’re a student, an early-career architect, or a project owner with decades of experience, from Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, or Algeria, this course is open to everyone and requires no prior qualifications to enroll.
Sustainable construction concepts are included to help everyone apply best practices. The course emphasizes practical tools, case studies, and collaborative learning. All participants gain accessible insights applicable to everyday projects.
3. It teaches practical, directly applicable skills
Rather than abstract theory, the course focuses on concrete tools: bio-climatic design principles, life cycle analysis, whole-life cost approaches, and building labels, skills you can apply to real projects right away.
4. It’s built specifically for the Mediterranean climate
Most Sustainable construction training is generic. This course is different because it targets real regional needs. It addresses the specific challenges of the Mediterranean, including hot dry summers, heatwaves, and water stress, so the material you study is directly relevant to projects in the region. That relevance extends to practical decisions you can apply immediately.
By focusing on local conditions, the course links theory to practical outcomes and decision making in design, materials, and water management. The result is a clearer path to applying sustainable practices on Mediterranean projects. It helps teams plan, select resources, and operate efficiently during hot periods.
5. Real field case studies
The course includes on-the-ground reports filmed in Algeria, Morocco, and France, showing how bio-climatic principles are applied in real buildings, not just in theory.
6. It fits around your schedule
The course runs over 3 modules across 3 weeks, at roughly 2 hours per week, a manageable format alongside a job or a degree program.
7. Live tutoring and expert access (in French)
During the first three weeks, learners can join discussion forums and ask questions to experts on sustainable construction.
The course content is available in French and Arabic.
8. It stays accessible after the course ends
Once the initial three-week period is over, the MOOC doesn’t disappear. It remains freely accessible with no time limit, so you can revisit it or start later at your own pace.
9. You’ll walk away with a certificate
Participants who complete the course receive a certificate. Those who go further with the optional in-depth track can earn an expert-level certificate, a concrete credential to add to your CV.
10. You’ll join a growing regional network
Sustainable construction in the Mediterranean needs a shared vocabulary between architects, engineers, project owners, and public institutions. This MOOC is a chance to build that common culture, and to connect with a community of professionals and students working toward the same goal across the region.
