On October 15 and 16, 2025, key stakeholders from Nigeria’s government, housing, and financial sectors gathered for an introductory workshop on the financing mechanism of the Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, aimed at the Nigerian buildings sector. While the workshop agenda focused on fundamental aspects, the level of expertise of participants quickly raised the ambition of the event, transforming it in a high-level strategy building opportunity to unlock Art. 6 finance in the country’s building sector.

The goal was to equip stakeholders with a clear understanding of cooperative approaches, market mechanisms, and integrity safeguards—including Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) for green building projects. However, participants moved from learning to action, identifying critical action points for increasing Art. 6 finance flows for buildings:
- Connecting the Dots between projects, finance, and regulation to bridge the gap between project opportunities and finance capabilities
- From Theory to Practice: learning from examples is essential for turning methodological knowledge into practical skills
- Strengthening Institutions: in-depth support is needed for the Nigerian National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) to lead the way, formulating policies and strategies that help unlock Art. 6 finance for buildings–and implementing them
As a result, the next workshops will focus on these action points, and strengthen learning-by-doing with in-depth case studies.
